2025 Fellowship Nomination Feedback (2)
On 21 November 2025 , Makerere University received official communication confirming the election of Prof. Peter Waiswa as a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS) —one of the continent’s highest scientific honors.
The election followed a rigorous and highly competitive evaluation process conducted by the African Academy of Sciences (AAS), involving expert review by the AAS Membership Advisory Committees , voting by existing Fellows of the Academy, and final endorsement by the AAS Governing Council . Fellowship in the Academy is awarded for life and is based on demonstrated excellence in scientific scholarship, innovation, leadership, and contribution to policy and society at both regional and global levels.
Prof. Waiswa’s election recognizes his sustained and influential contributions to global health , particularly in maternal, newborn and child health, health systems strengthening, and implementation research . As a Fellow, he is entitled to use the post-nominal title FAAS and becomes a member of the AAS General Assembly , the Academy’s highest decision-making body.
The official public announcement of the 2025 cohort of newly elected Fellows will be made during the Science Forum for South Africa (SFSA) in Pretoria on 24 November 2025 , marking a significant milestone in Prof. Waiswa’s academic and public service career.
Election to the African Academy of Sciences not only honors individual excellence, but also carries responsibilities, including leadership in policy engagement, participation in scientific working groups, service on expert review panels, and contribution to advancing science, technology, and innovation across Africa.
