Prof. Peter Waiswa’s scientific contribution extends beyond research leadership and publications. He is trusted in national and global health spaces for expert advisory service, scientific review, editorial contribution, and academic evaluation. These roles reflect the confidence placed in his judgment across science, policy, and implementation.

Expert Advisory and Scientific Appointments

Prof. Waiswa serves in several high-level advisory and technical roles that shape global and national thinking on maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. His portfolio includes membership on the WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Group of Experts (STAGE), the WHO Guideline Development Group on Influenza Clinical Management, the WHO–UNICEF Informal Technical Advisory Group on norms for small and/or sick newborn care, the Countdown 2030 Health Policy and Systems Group, and the Uganda National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (UNITAG). He also serves as Commissioner on the Lancet Commission on Evidence-Based Implementation in Global Health.

Editorial and Peer Review Contribution

Prof. Waiswa has played an active role in strengthening scientific quality through peer review and editorial service. Since 2010, he has served as a regular expert referee for leading journals including The Lancet, The Lancet Global Health, PLOS, Bulletin of the World Health Organization, BMC journals, Tropical Medicine and International Health, Health Policy and Planning, and BMJ journals. He has also served on the editorial board of the International Journal of Public Health since 2015.

This work reflects a long-standing role in supporting scientific rigor, improving research standards, and contributing to the credibility of evidence used in policy and practice.

Scientific Evaluation and Academic Review

In addition to publishing and reviewing research, Prof. Waiswa contributes to formal academic and scientific evaluation. His portfolio includes service on thesis examination committees, including roles as pre-defence moderator and PhD opponent. He has also reviewed internal Makerere University College of Health Sciences grants and scholarship calls, as well as implementation research proposals for MRC, Wellcome Trust, and the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research.

These responsibilities highlight his role in assessing quality, guiding academic standards, and supporting the development of strong research across institutions and funding systems.

Prof. Waiswa’s broader professional service includes membership on the Vaccines Advisory Expert Committee of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences and the Uganda Medical and Dental Association.
