KAMPALA — Associate Professor Peter Kyobe Waiswa of the Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) has been recognised among Makerere University’s top researchers at the Vice-Chancellor’s Research Excellence Awards 2026, in recognition of his outstanding scholarly productivity and impact in public health research.
Honoured during Makerere University’s 76th Graduation Ceremony at Freedom Square, Assoc. Prof. Waiswa stood out as one of the University’s overall leading researchers after publishing 43 peer-reviewed papers in 2025, placing him among Makerere’s most prolific scholars.
A respected health systems scientist, Waiswa’s work focuses on maternal, newborn, and child health, with a strong emphasis on how health systems perform during their most critical and vulnerable moments — including childbirth, early life, and community-level care. His research continues to shape conversations around equity, service delivery, and health system performance across Africa.
His recognition reflects not only individual excellence, but also the growing strength of MakSPH in producing policy-relevant, high-impact research that responds to real public health challenges.
Also recognised from MakSPH were Associate Professor David Musoke, honoured for his contribution to disease control and environmental health research, and Juliana Namutundu, who received recognition in the early-career category for her emerging research leadership.
Together, these recognitions highlight MakSPH’s growing contribution to Makerere University’s vision of becoming a truly research-led institution, while reaffirming the School’s role in generating evidence that improves lives and informs policy.
