Community Service & Public Impact

Community Engagement & Public Service

Beyond academia, Prof. Peter Waiswa’s work is rooted in communities. His public service reflects a long-standing commitment to translating research, leadership, and advocacy into practical action that improves lives. Through grassroots institutions, public engagement, and community-centered initiatives, he supports healthier, more equitable systems for women, children, families, and underserved populations.

Rooted in Communities, Guided by Evidence

Community service is a central part of Prof. Waiswa’s professional identity. His work is grounded in the belief that public health leadership should be felt in people’s everyday lives — through better services, stronger local systems, empowered communities, and practical solutions that respond to real needs. His community-facing work reflects the same values that shape his academic work: equity, accountability, and African-led solutions.

From Research to Community Action

Prof. Waiswa’s community service is closely connected to his broader work in health systems, implementation science, and maternal, newborn, and child health. His research focuses not only on generating evidence, but also on helping communities and health systems apply that evidence in practical ways. This includes work to strengthen community-level newborn care, improve the involvement of Community Health Workers, support home visits, and work with families to improve care.

This is what makes his model distinctive: community service is not separate from research. It is part of a wider mission to ensure that knowledge leads to tangible improvements in care, service delivery, and everyday health outcomes.

Public Engagement and Advocacy

Prof. Waiswa is also an active public voice on health equity, maternal and newborn health, and African-led development. Through media appearances, documentaries, public commentary, and advocacy platforms, he helps bring public health issues into wider conversation and supports informed dialogue around systems change. The portfolio describes him as an outspoken voice for equity, justice, and self-determined African development.

His public engagement includes documentary features, health innovation media, and expert commentary on maternal and newborn health and health systems.
